21st Century Schizos PT.1

tumblr_l42jgqKdIr1qc3bxko1_500.jpg

"Now this would be a beautiful death."

One year ago Cecil Frena and I nearly died in a terrifying car accident. Moments before the time disintegration during the flip over we dissected at length how anyone could ever (quote unquote) make it in the world of music. The answer was murky then but now seems monumentally clear: do right. Don't just make good music but make great music. Just good enough is not good enough. Don't just perform your songs, die for them. Anything worth living for is worth dying for. These guys are living out a dream on the road, adventuring from city to city but don't be fooled, this is no game, they're on the frontline every single night wearing their hearts on their sleeve. They are making it by making it. Die for your passions. Irony and apathy are over. We have new sincerity. Believers know it already -every second of a Gobble Gobble show is a reminder of how you felt on the best day of your life.

All we have is our HEALTH

club_outside.jpgclub_outside.jpg

Two years ago I was hanging out backstage trying to divulge the secrets of the Smell from the drummer. I knew some amazing stuff was coming out of L.A but I never expected it to be a futurist version of the lost art of math rock. So tech.

One year ago kids finally caught on. So much so that it felt like I was on the set of Teen Spirt - bodies flailing, rowdy crowd surfing, just capital "M" melee onstage and off. But the music we were moving to wasn't all melodic at all, oh it was dancey and poppy. No at the core it was actually just was noise, unadulterated fuzzed out noise.

HEALTH are the future of punk. dance. No, they are simply the future.

I just wish I could be there to see them trip out on Desi.

Oh followup: two years ago i gave the drummer the first Desi cd, one year ago Cherk got high with him and tonight they're playing with them.

If you miss this show all I can say is have fun loving in the past.

Slip Through

Artwork by Landon Speers

What happens when a modern day Brian Wilson obsesses over technoise, frequencies and boom baps instead of cheeseburgers, L.S.D and destroying the Beatles? Slip Through, that's what. Master crafted by the most slept on producer in Canada, Réal Cardinal aka Comaduster isn't on the production game anymore, he's on the perfection game.

Never Slept

You heard this Ennio Morricone record yet? of course you haven't, it doesn't exist. On your planet. That's what you can expect from Sombre Reptiles, music blog of Listen Records' Kris Burwash. Remember Alien Nation? Think of those dudes flashing forward to a 3rd generation weirdo alien kids making music in Mumbai...that's what Kris would turn you on to.

The Big Sandwich is electronics, straight-up. No question Markus Vuorensola can easily out-name you both 20 n0-wave live bootlegs and flying lotus beat tapes but dude knows blips and bloops to boot. no skronk electro here. Real, please.

CJSR superstar Aaron Levin's Weird Canada is the home of n0/new-school:freakbeat/psych/kooky.
Think Headphone-Bedroom.
This be all for the love of the basement.

Designarrs pt.3

_obits_new_fix02.jpg

Justin LaFontaine's geometry = New Math. No one can touch him on posters right now. That Obits print was the most iconic image of this year's Sled Island. It even became the face of the band's website - if it's good enough for Jehu-ligans it's good enough for every human.

Lando Speers is an immensely talented photographer with a keen sense for capturing energy and aggression. Little wonder that the best Red Hot Daggers photos were his. He also has an intimate understanding of gizmos, which makes his musical projects, "Headaches" and "St. Gilles" so fascinating.
